An assistant football coach at the University of South Alabama in Mobile was found dead at his home, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, a coroner said.
An autopsy on Kurt Crain, 47, was to be conducted Wednesday, Baldwin County Coroner Stanley Vinson told CNN.
Crain was found Tuesday afternoon at his home in Spanish Fort, east of Mobile.
"It does not appear to be any foul play involved," said Vinson.
University officials lamented Crain's death.
"We've lost a great man, coach and mentor at the University of South Alabama," said head football coach Joey Jones in a statement. "In my opinion, Kurt was one of the best overall coaches I've ever seen. He cared about the players, they respected him greatly, and he was a tremendous football coach and motivator."
Crain joined the South Alabama staff in July 2008 and worked with the program's inside linebackers. He himself was an Associated Press All-American linebacker at Auburn University. Crain played two seasons in the NFL before working at Auburn, Troy University and Texas Christian University.
Crain is survived by his wife and three children.
