The revelation that Bart, Homer and the whole gang in the iconic "Simpsons" TV show are from Springfield, Oregon, is old news to some of the actual folks in Springfield.
“We kind of already figured that this was the Springfield he was talking about,” Niel Laudati, Springfield community relations manager, told HLN on Wednesday. “Because he (Matt Groening) is from Oregon.”
The cat -- yellow-hued and with big eyes -- was let out of the bag by the cartoon’s creator in a new interview with the Smithsonian magazine. “Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon,” he said.
Of course to many of us, the fictiticious town where Moe served drinks at the bar was said to be located in a state that borders several others, including Kentucky, Nevada and Maine. Secretly for years, other Springfields (hello, Massachusetts, Missouri and Illinois and “Take that, Ohio?”) had hoped that the longest-running animated show in TV history dwelled within city limits.
But no, Oregon’s where it’s at.
“It’s fun that people are realizing it but we kind of already secretly knew,” Laudati said of the city with a population around 60,000.
That didn't stop longtime fans of the show from reacting to the news with disappointment, heartbreak and utter disbelief.
David G. tweeted: “I don't buy Matt Groening's story. In over twenty seasons I've almost never seen it rain on that show.”
